Freshers Safety

Freshers Safety

Freshers’ is the first few weeks of your time at university, and for many students it involves moving to a new city, making new friends and trying new things!

There are lots of things to keep you safe throughout the year as you travel around the city, visit businesses of all types (including our affiliate venues) and experience life at university, but during freshers’ we at the students’ unions, our colleagues at the university and others across the city put extra effort into helping you settle in and find your feet safely.

Nottingham Trent Students’ Union

Each year, over 200 returning students volunteer to help new students move in, make new friends, find their way around the city and make the most of Freshers’ Week. These Freshers’ Team members are also at all of the official Trent Events, looking after students on what are some of their first nights out and helping they find their way to and from the venue safety.

They are easily identifiable by a brightly coloured t-shirt (the colour changes every year) and each team will have a Captain and Vice-Captain who have been first aid trained, so look out for them if you need some help or advice and you’re not sure what to do (although of course speak to campus or venue security first or ring 999 in an emergency).

University of Nottingham Students’ Union

At UoNSU we are committed to making sure you settle in to university with a diverse range of events designed to help you try new things, find things out, make friends and have fun!

Throughout freshers’ week you can find our staff wearing visible, UoNSU t-shirts around the Portland building, across SB, Jubilee and University Park Campuses and at any events organised by us in the SU.

For any of our late-night events, we will also have extra first-aid and medical provision provided by a trusted third-party provider and will have student reps to help you find the best experience, as well as directions into town and back home if you need them.

University of Nottingham

If you’ve moved into a hall of residence run by the university or one of its partners, you may be invited to a ‘hall talk’ with campus security giving you security advice, tips and tools alongside the police liaison officers.

If you’re staying elsewhere (or miss the hall talk) keep an eye out for the security stall at one of our freshers’ fairs where they’ll have lots of tools for keeping yourself, your possessions or your drink safe and will be happy to have a nice chat.

Across the City

During the first two weeks of the year, in partnership with UoNSUNTSU and the two Universities, we work closely with local venues through Pubwatch, to ensure that everyone is prepared and share information on how to keep students safe.

Nottinghamshire Police also have additional resources prepared to deter and respond to any threatening or criminal behaviour, and also have a supply of testing kits available to respond to and quickly confirm any suspected cases of spiking so that investigations can begin.
